Potential of PIXE and RBS for cultural heritage studies
Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) is a powerful technique for determining the composition of surfaces. The PIXE technique has found widespread application for cultural heritage investigations, such as; determining the provenance of metal objects, characterising the evolution of metal joining techniques in jewellery, and investigating the techniques used in painting by the old masters. After a simple introduction to the PIXE technique and some examples of the application of PIXE will be presented. The possibility for conducting projects and research in cultural heritage within Haute Ecole Arc using PIXE will be elucidated. Finally, we will launch the idea of the possibility of a dedicated experiment facility for analysis of cultural heritage objects will be presented.
